What can I recycle?

Most programs throughout South Carolina accept aluminum cans, plastic bottles, steel cans (e.g., fruit, vegetable, soup), cardboard, newspaper and glass bottles (clear, green and brown). Programs differ from community to community. One of the most important actions that you can take is to find out what is accepted in your community.

For a list of recyclable materials that may be recycled in city and county recycling programs as well as retail outlets, click here. To see which ones are accepted in your local program, click here.

Recycling starts when you place the correct items in your recycling container. This means material that is accepted in your community’s recycling program. Placing the wrong items in your recycling containers increases costs for local governments and recycling businesses.

Everything can't be recycled. Not all material can be made into a new product. Even if a material can be made into a new product, it isn’t always cost effective. To learn more about common recycling mistakes, see the "Recycling's Dirty Dozen" fact sheet and "Recycle Right" postcard.
